Waiting on Wednesday #5

Mind Games by Kiersten White

Mind Games (Mind Games, #1)

Fia was born with flawless instincts. Her first impulse, her gut feeling, is always exactly right. Her sister, Annie, is blind to the world around her—except when her mind is gripped by strange visions of the future.

Trapped in a school that uses girls with extraordinary powers as tools for corporate espionage, Annie and Fia are forced to choose over and over between using their abilities in twisted, unthinkable ways… or risking each other’s lives by refusing to obey.

In a stunning departure from her New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy, Kiersten White delivers a slick, edgy, heartstoppingly intense psychological thriller about two sisters determined to protect each other—no matter the cost.

I loved her previous books and can't even begin to say how much I want this book. Just looking at that cover makes me want to squeal! The synopsis above sounds pretty interesting as well. And you know what's the best part? If you pre-order the book now and go to her blog (Kiersten Writes), you get a free bookmark SIGNED and shipped to you! I suggest you go now while the offer still stands!

Confessions of a Murderer Suspect

by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Confessions of a Murder Suspect

“I knew my transformation was complete when Dr.Keyes asked, "How are you feeling today, Tandy?" and I responded "I'm not”

"Permanently taken care of? Fired, I reassured myself. That must be what she means.
The person who did...what? Were they talking about someone working for the hedge fund? Or the man driving the vehicle that killed Katherine?
Or the boy who had tried to steal thier precious Tandoori away from them?
The boy I think I loved...once?
I'm so sorry, reader.I can't go on thinking about that right now."

"Can you imagine the words you'd use, dear reader, to tell your family that your parents had been murdered?"

A very mysterious read so far...hope to see more as the story plot deepens!

Chasing Brooklyn

Chasing BrooklynTitle: Chasing Brooklyn
Author: Lisa Schroeder
Publisher: Simon Pulse

Overview

Restless souls and empty hearts

Brooklyn can't sleep. Her boyfriend, Lucca, died only a year ago, and now her friend Gabe has just died of an overdose. Every time she closes her eyes, Gabe's ghost is there waiting for her. She has no idea what he wants or why it isn't Lucca visiting her dreams.

Nico can't stop. He's always running, trying to escape the pain of losing his brother, Lucca. But when Lucca's ghost begins leaving messages, telling Nico to help Brooklyn, emotions come crashing to the surface.

As the nightmares escalate and the messages become relentless, Nico reaches out to Brooklyn. But neither of them can admit that they're being haunted. Until they learn to let each other in, not one soul will be able to rest.

Review
Another unexpected read which surprised me, Chasing Brooklyn is written in verse and is about two lives coming together after losing a loved one. This book is touching and a quick read for times when you want to avoid lengthy texts but be warned, although this book was short, it kept dragging me back to read it all over again. Even after finishing it, the verses kept replaying themselves...over and over and over again. This was actually pretty inspiring and I deeply felt every emotion. Those letters which Brooklyn writes were so sad and by the time I finished the book, I was pretty much restless. In sumary:

1. This book was inspirational
2. I felt every emotion
3. The verses are still stuck in my head :)
4. It was short but truly amazing and surpringly good
5. I would read it again!

Shards & Ashes

by

Gripping and powerful original stories of dystopian worlds from New York Times bestselling authors.
Expected publication: February 19th 2013 by HarperCollins

Not much from that but just the thought of having a book with so many of my favorite authors is enough to get me reading it! I would have loved more of a synopsis but, then again, where's all the fun in that? The cover....one question....who designed it?!? I mean, seriously, WONDERFUL and something I would definitely just grab off the shelves without even bothering to read what's it about . Great cover. Great authors. Conclusion: HAS TO BE A GREAT BOOK :)

Teaser Tuesday #4

Today's teasers will be from:

Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder

*picture taken from Goodreads

"My reflection tells one story
My heart a different one

The difference is,
hearts don't lie.
Mirrors do. "

"How many days was I like that?
Pretending to listen, but not hearing a word?
Pretending to care when I hated it all?
Pretending to live when I was dying inside?"

"“She trusted him.
She had faith in him.
And he left her forever.
Something tells me she's not forgetting that anytime soon.”

"“I'd reply, love doesn't tell time.

Love is simply there
or it isn't.

Everyday,
in every way,
it was there.”

“Love is the answer. Not fear.”

I absolutely loved this book and the precious moments its given me. A quick read but one which you must go back and reflect.

Clockwork Princess Snippets

Clockwork Princess By Cassandra Clare

(The Infernal Devices #3)
Teaser #1
"Would you?" said Gabriel to Will, hotly. "If it was your family?" His lip curled. "Never mind. It's not as if you know the meaning of loyalty —"
"Gabriel." Gideon's voice was a reprimand to his brother. "Do not speak to Will in that manner."
Teaser #2
"He began it," Cecily said, jerking her chin at Will, though she knew it was pointless. Jem, Will's parabatai, treated her with the distant sweet kindness reserved for the little sisters of one's friends, but he would always side with Will. Kindly, but firmly, he put Will above everything else in the world. Well, nearly everything.
Teaser #3
Jem knotted his fingers in the material of Will's sleeve. "You are my parabatai," he said. "You said once I could ask anything of you."
Teaser #4
Jem drew the bow back and let the arrow fly; it struck the creature in the side. The massive demon worm writhed in agony, undulating as it swept its great, blind head from side to side, uprooting shrubbery with its thrashings. Leaves filled the air and the boys choked on dust, Gideon backing up with his seraph blade in his hand, trying to see by its light.
"It's coming toward us," he said in a low voice.
And indeed it was, the arrow still protruding from its wet, grayish skin, humping its body along with incredible speed. A flick of its tail caught the edge of a statue, sending it flying into the dry ornamental pool, where it shattered into dust.
"By the Angel, it just crushed Sophocles," noted Will. "Has no one respect for the classics these days?"
Teaser #5
And the gold of her ruined wedding dress.
Teaser #6
"A very magnanimous statement, Gideon." said Magnus.
"I'm Gabriel."
Magnus waved a hand. "All Lightwoods look the same to me."
Teaser #7
Will's eyes met Tessa's as she came closer, almost tripping again over the torn hem of her gown. For a moment, they were in perfect understanding. Jem was what they could still look each other straight in the eye about. On the topic of Jem, they were both fierce and unyielding. Tessa saw Will's hand tighten on Jem's sleeve. "She's here," he said.
Jem's eyes opened slowly. Tessa fought to keep the look of shock from her face. His pupils were blown out, his irises a thin ring of silver around the black. "Ni shou shang le ma, qin ai de?" he whispered. "Are you hurt, my love?".
Teaser #8
"Though Will was saying earlier," Tessa added, "that heroes all come to bad ends, and he could not imagine why anyone would want to be one, anyway."
"Ah." Jem's hand squeezed hers briefly, and then let it go. "Well, Will is looking at it from the hero's viewpoint, isn't he? But as for the rest of us, it's an easy answer."
"Is it?"
"Of course." His voice was almost a whisper now. "Heroes endure because we need them. Not for their own sakes. If Will…"
Teaser #9
"Wo wei ni xie de," he said, as he raised the violin to his left shoulder, tucking it under his chin. He had told her many violinists used a shoulder rest, but he did not: there was a slight mark on the side of his throat, like a permanent bruise, where the violin rested.
"You — made something for me?" Tessa asked.
"I wrote something for you," he corrected, with a smile, and began to play.
Teaser #10
"You are not really dying," Will said, the oddest tone to his voice, "are you?"
Teaser #11
Will rose slowly to his feet. He could not believe he was doing what he was doing, but it was clear that he was, clear as the silver rim around the black of Jem's eyes. "If there is a life after this one," he said, "let me meet you in it, James Carstairs."
"There will be other lives." Jem held his hand out, and for a moment, they clasped hands, as they had done during their parabatai ritual, reaching across twin rings of fire to interlace their fingers with each other. "The world is a wheel," he said. “When we rise or fall, we do it together.”
Will tightened his grip on Jem's hand, which felt thin as twigs in his. "Well, then," he said, through a tight throat, "since you say there will be another life for me, let us both pray I do not make as colossal a mess of it as I have this one."
Teaser #12
Tessa put a hand against the wall as she made her way numbly down the stairs. What had she almost done? What had she nearly told Will?
Teaser #13
Gideon touched her cheek, lightly, with the tips of his fingers. "Did you know your name means 'wisdom'? It was very well-given."
Teaser #14
Tessa craned her head back to look at Will. "You know that feeling," she said, "when you are reading a book, and you know that it is going to be a tragedy; you can feel the cold and darkness coming, see the net drawing tight around the characters who live and breathe on the pages. But you are tied to the story as if being dragged behind a carriage and you cannot let go or turn the course aside." His blue eyes were dark with understanding — of course Will would understand — and she hurried on. "I feel now as if the same is happening, only not to characters on a page but to my own beloved friends and companions. I do not want to sit by while tragedy comes for us. I would turn it aside, only I struggle to discover how that might be done."
"You fear for Jem," Will said.
"Yes," she said. "And I fear for you, too."
"No," Will said, hoarsely. "Don't waste that on me, Tess."
Teaser #15
"If Jem dies, I cannot be with Tessa," said Will. "Because it will be as if I were waiting for him to die, or took some joy in his death, if it let me have her. And I will not be that person. I will not profit from his death. So he must live." He lowered his arm, his sleeve bloody. "It is the only way any of this can ever mean anything. Otherwise it is only -"
"Pointless, needless suffering and pain? I don’t suppose it would help if I told you that was the way life is. The good suffer, the evil flourish, and all that is mortal passes away," Magnus said.
"I want more than that," said Will. "You made me want more than that. You showed me I was only ever cursed because I had chosen to believe myself so. You told me there was possibility, meaning. And now you would turn your back on what you created."
Teaser #16
"Will!"
He turned at the familiar voice and saw Tessa. There was a small path cut along the side of the hill, lined with unfamiliar white flowers, and she was walking up it, toward him. Her long brown hair blew in the wind — she had taken off her straw bonnet, and held it in one hand, waving it at him and smiling as if she were glad to see him.
His own heart leaped up at the sight of her. "Tess," he called. But she was still such a distance away — she seemed both very near and very far suddenly and at the same time. He could see every detail of her pretty, upturned face, but could not touch her, and so he stood, waiting and desiring, and his heart beat like the wings of seagulls in his chest.
At last she was there, close enough that he could see where the grass and flowers bent beneath the tread of her shoes. He reached out for her —
Teaser #17
"I am not at your beck and call," Magnus said. "I helped with de Quincey because Camille requested it of me, and Will once, because he offered me a favor in return. I am a warlock. And I do not serve Shadowhunters for free."
Teaser #18
Will began to move toward the door to join Charlotte. Halfway there, he turned back, and crossed the room to Tessa: "Please," he said, "while I am with him, would you do something for me?"
Tessa looked up and swallowed. He was too close, too close: all the lines, shapes, angles of Will filled her field of vision as the sound of his voice filled her ears. "Yes, certainly," she said. "What is it?"
Teaser #19
"You know," Cecily said, "you really didn't have to throw that man through the window."
Teaser #20
"It has been the privilege and the honor of my life to know you."
Teaser #21
"What are you doing following me around the back streets of London, you little idiot?" Will demanded, giving her arm a light shake.
Cecily's eyes narrowed. "This morning it was cariad, now it's idiot." (Note: Cariad is a Welsh endearment, like 'darling' or 'love'.)
"Oh, you’re using a Glamour rune. There's one thing to declare, you are not afraid of anything when you live in the country. But this is London."
"I'm not afraid of London," Cecily said defiantly.
Will leaned closer, almost hissing in her ear *and said something very complicated in Welsh*
She laughed. "No, it wouldn't do you any good to tell me to go home. You are my brother, and I want to go with you."
Will blinked at her words.
You are my brother, and I want to go with you.
It was the sort of thing he was used to hearing Jem say.
Although Cecily was unlike Jem in every other conceivable possible way, she did share one quality with him. Stubbornness. When Cecily said she wanted something, it did not express an idle desire, but an iron determination.
"Do you even care where I'm going?" he said. "What if I were going to Hell?"
"I've always wanted to see Hell," Cecily said. "Doesn't everyone?"
"Most of us spend our time trying to stay out of it, Cecily. I'm going to an infrit den, if you must know, to purchase drugs from vile, dissolute criminals. They may clap eyes on you, and decide to sell you."
"Wouldn’t you stop them?"
"I suppose it would depend on whether they cut me a part of the profit."
She shook her head. "Jem is your parabatai," she said. "He is your brother, given to you by the Clave, but I am your sister by blood. Why would you do anything for him, but you only want me to go home?"
"How do you know the drugs are for Jem?" Will said.
"I'm not an idiot, Will."
"No, more's the pity. Jem- Jem is like the better part of me. I would not expect you to understand. I owe him. I owe him this."
"So what am I?" Cecily said.
Will exhaled, too desperate to check himself. "You are my weakness."
"And Tessa is your heart," she said, not angrily, but thoughtfully. "I am not fooled. As I told you, I’m not an idiot. And more’s the pity for you, although I suppose we all want things we can’t have."
"Oh," said Will, "and what do you want?"
"I want you to come home." A strand of black hair was stuck to her cheek by the dampness, and Will fought the urge to pull her cloak closer about her, to make her safe as he had when she was a child.
"The Institute is my home," Will sighed, and leaned his head against the stone wall. "I can’t stand out her arguing with you all evening, Cecily. If you're determined to follow me into Hell, I can't stop you."
"Finally," she said approvingly. "You’ve seen sense. I knew you would, you're related to me."
Will fought the urge to shake her.
"Are you ready?"
She nodded, and he raised his hand to knock on the door.
Teaser #22
London 1873.
"Will?" Charlotte Fairchild eased the door of the Institute’s training room open. "Will, are you in there?"
A muffled grunt was the only response.
The door swung all the way open, revealing a wide, high-ceilinged room on the other side.
Teaser #23
Her throat ached: adoration, heartbreak, in equal measure. "Kiss me," she said. "Please."
Teaser #24
No one can say that death found in me a willing comrade, or that I went easily.
Teaser #25
THE INFERNAL DEVICES ARE WITHOUT PITY.
THE INFERNAL DEVICES ARE WITHOUT REGRET.
THE INFERNAL DEVICES ARE WITHOUT NUMBER.
THE INFERNAL DEVICES WILL NEVER STOP COMING.
(written on a wall in blood in Clockwork Princess)

Teaser #26
Gabriel would not soon forget the look that spread over the man's face at that: there was satisfaction in it, but there was little surprise. It was clear he had expected nothing else, and nothing better, from the Lightwood boys.
Teaser #27
Slowly, Jem put the violin back in its case, and laid the bow beside it. Only then did he turn to Tessa. His expression was shy, though his white shirt was soaked through with sweat and the pulse in his neck was pounding.
"Did you like it?" he said. "I am not good with words, so I wrote how I felt about you in music."
Teaser #28
"Tess?" A soft voice at the door; she looked up and saw Will there, silhouetted in the light from the corridor.
Teaser #29
"Jem told me what Ragnor Fell said about my father," Will said. "That for my father, there was only ever one woman he loved, and it was her for him, or nothing. You are that for me. I love you, and I will only ever love you until I die —"
Teaser #30
“You do not want to help us,” Will said to Magnus. “You do not want to position yourself as an enemy of Mortmain’s.”
“Well, can you blame him?” Woolsey rose in a whirl of yellow silk. “What could you possibly have to offer that would make the risk worth it to him?”
“I will give you anything,” said Tessa in a low voice that Will felt in his bones. “Anything at all, if you can help us help Jem.”
Magnus gripped a handful of his black hair. “God, the two of you. I can make inquiries. Track down some of the more unusual shipping routes. Old Molly —”
“I’ve been to her,” Will said. “Something’s frightened her so badly she won’t even crawl out of her grave.”
Woolsey snorted. “And that doesn’t tell you anything, little Shadowhunter? Is it really worth all this, just to stretch your friend’s life out another few months, another year? He will die anyway. And the sooner he dies, the sooner you can have his fiancée, the one you’re in love with.” He cut his amused gaze toward Tessa. “Really you ought to be counting down the days till he expires with great eagerness.”

Teaser Tuesday #3

Today's teasers will be from Avow (The Archers of Avalon #3) by Chelsea FineAvow (The Archers of Avalon, #3)

“I totally kicked Ashman ass over there! I was all like hi-yah and you wanna piece of me? I was a super slayer! Buffy’s got nothing on me.”
---
“It was life and death out there, guys. Life and death. They just kept coming at me and I just kept putting them down … I mean, sure, I screamed like a girl a few times and accidentally stabbed myself at the beginning, but still.”  ~ Nate

“A little heads up would have been nice.
Hey Heather, since we're history partners and all, I figured I should tell you I'm a murderer. But I'm hot so it's okay.
From now on, Heather was going to do background checks on all her buddies.” ~Heather and Gabriel

“Tristan followed so close behind her she could feel his hot breath on the back of her neck. Again.
“Ten foot rule,” called Nate.
“Bite me!” Tristan hollered back, more hot breath caressing her skin with his words. A wonderful shiver ran through her body. Damn him and his beautiful mouth and hot breath and his leather-smelling shirt. She assumed he was headed to his own room in the basement, but when she walked into the guest bedroom, he followed her inside. She turned around to tell him to leave her alone, but his bright green eyes derailed her words. He was so pretty…
No! No. He was not pretty. He was in danger of dying. Focus on the danger, Scarlet. She glared at him. “What are you doing?”
“I’m sleeping with you.”
Was he insane? She lifted a brow. “I thought you were mad at me.”
“I’m concerned. Not mad.”
“Huh. Well either way you’re not sleeping with me.”
“Yes, I am.”
He was insane. “No,” Scarlet repeated. “You’re not. You could die, Tristan. We can’t touch and we certainly can’t…sleep together.” She felt her face flush.
A look of amusement crossed his face. “I meant sleep, Scar.”
“Oh. Well.” She cleared her throat. “I don’t want to wake up next to a corpse, so, like…scram.” ~ Scarlet and Tristan

City of Heavenly Fire Snippets

City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

(The Mortal Instruments #6)

Release date: March 2014

Snippet #1
Alec looked down at the shattered pieces in disbelief. "You broke my phone."
Jace shrugged. "Guys don’t let other guys keep calling other guys. Okay, that came out wrong. Friends don't let friends keep calling their exes and hanging up. Seriously. You have to stop."
Alec looked furious. "So you broke my brand new phone? Thanks a lot."
Jace smiled serenely and lay back on the grass. "You're welcome."
Snippet #2
"I think," Jace said, "that you don’t want to tell your secrets, so you decided to break up with Alec because..."
Snippet#3
"No killing," Jordan said. "We're trying to make you feel peaceful, so you don't go up in flames. Blood, killing, war, those are all non-peaceful things. Isn't there anything else you like? Rainforests? Chirping birds?"
"Weapons," said Jace. "I like weapons."
"I'm starting to think we have a problematic issue of personal philosophy here."
Jace leaned forward, his palms flat on the ground. "I'm a warrior," he said. "I was brought up as a warrior. I didn't have toys, I had weapons. I slept with a wooden sword until I was five. My first books were medieval demonologies with illuminated pages. The first songs I learned were chants to banish demons. I know what brings me peace, and it isn't sandy beaches or chirping birds in rainforests. I want a weapon in my hand and a strategy to win."
Jordan looked at him levelly. "So you're saying that what brings you peace... is war."
"Now you get it."
Snippet #4
"We shouldn't," protested Isabelle. "The Clave has a plan."
"The Clave has the collective intelligence of a pineapple," said Jace.
Alec blinked up at them. "Jace is right."
Isabelle turned on her brother. "What do you know? You weren't even paying attention."
"I was," Alec said, injured. "I said Jace was right."
"Yeah, but there's like a 90% chance of me being right most of the time, so that's not proof you were listening," said Jace. "That's just a good guess."

Review
Absolutely spectacular and well written, Avow is the last book of the Archers of Avalon series. Again, Chelsea has managed to capture everything needed in a captivating book. Here, I thought the book couldn't get any better but then she writes that ending and I'm just left there thinking...OMG that was so perfect!!! I mean, what better way to end a book then to start from where it all began? Anyway, she also allows us to fully understand what's going on in Scarlet's head all the secrets she has stored in there(and let me just say, there are some really interesting ones in there!!!) by writing about her past and I really did love the scenes between Tristan and Scarlet...eventhough some were very heart breaking. I honestly don't know how she comes up with all these ideas and characters but I hope there will be more books written by Chelsea cause I will definitely read them. Overall, an enticing and nerve wracking trilogy. Phew...and here I was thinking something totally unbelievable and depressing thing was going to happen :)

Full review soon to come!!!

Free Four (Divergent #1.1) By Veronica Roth

Free Four: Tobias Tells the Story (Divergent, #1.1)Title: Free Four: Tobias Tells the Story
Author: Veronica Roth
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

#1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth retells a pivotal Divergent scene (chapter 13) from Tobias's point of view. This thirteen-page scene reveals unknown facts and fascinating details about Four's character, his past, his own initiation, and his thoughts about new Dauntless initiate Tris Prior.

(This is the scene when Tris learns to throw knives for the first time and stands up for her friend, Al)

Review

So....just when you think you've read all there is, you find out that there's this AMAZINGLY written scene written in FOUR'S POV...and then that's when all the squealing starts to begin all over again. Except it's even louder because, this time, the story is in FOUR's POV!!! Did you get that? FOUR!!!
Okay, so after getting all dreamy, you start reading it and what you realise is, this is so, so, soooo...you know what? I don't even think I can describe it. But here's a little outline of it:
Wonderful title. Beautiful Cover. Perfect Characters. Meaningful scene. Brave sacrifices. Dark secrets and finally, Unrequited love...*Sighs*. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, the most important of them all: A look inside of Four's thoughts and his reasons for his acions. With this, the book now makes a lot more sense and has even greater depth. Will reading this just once please me? No. Will I read more of Veronica's books? Absolutely! Will I ever stop loving Four? Never.
I can't get enough of this. However, there is one question left unanswered. WHY AREN'T YOU READING THIS?

City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

How about some teasers?

Teaser #1
Alec looked down at the shattered pieces in disbelief. "You broke my phone."
Jace shrugged. "Guys don’t let other guys keep calling other guys. Okay, that came out wrong. Friends don't let friends keep calling their exes and hanging up. Seriously. You have to stop."
Alec looked furious. "So you broke my brand new phone? Thanks a lot."
Jace smiled serenely and lay back on the grass. "You're welcome."

Teaser #2
"I think," Jace said, "that you don’t want to tell your secrets, so you decided to break up with Alec because..."
